I'm so grateful that this book exists. Malcolm X patiently and carefully captures the reality of the civil rights era. It is amazing to watch his mind work, to see how brilliant and passionate and brave he was. This book truly is timeless. There are so many lessons to be gained. He details every part of his life- in the beginning it was a bit slow, since I was eager to get to the more political moments. These parts are still fascinating especially if you're curious about culture in these decades, but it definitely was exciting to hear him detail his religious and political ideals, and those are the moments that stand out to me the most.

While reading this today, it's easy to judge Malcom X's anger, misogyny and hatred. But for me this is a story of hope. From being a street hustler and a junkie to a fanatic cult leader to finally a man who understood global brotherhood, the book tells us about an extraordinary journey. A journey that helps us understand the fight of the people for their basic rights and how our actions affect everything around us. A journey that should be taken by all, at least through this book.

Malcolm X will forever be an icon!
Absolutely essential. Malcolm X parses out his philosophy and demonstrates an evolution of thought that could teach us all if only we listened. I listened to the Audible edition read by Lawrence Fishburne which is an incredible production of an important book.
There are some antiquated views towards women, but none that stick out considering the time he wrote this book. The fact that he had daughters and a wife he loved dearly (as well as other strong women in his life) might have tempered his chauvinism a bit.
Otherwise, the book is absolutely prescient and prophetic. He predicted his own death, as well as the continuing travails of a nation that still can't deal properly with its racist past. In this regard he had more hope than many do today. So much work still has to be done.

I feel weird rating a book about someone’s life. Malcom X’s life wasn’t easy and he was often misunderstood. I learned almost nothing about him in school, but at the urging of a coworker who said this biography “changed her life” I decided to give it a go. Malcom X was so incredibly intelligent, and determined. He was also very well spoken and eloquent. For anybody who wants to learn about Malcom read this book.

Read this a long time ago for my history A Level coursework but it had such an impact on me; I adore Malcolm X and this book truly captures his life in the best way. How awfully sad to think of how he died
