For much of the book, I considered stopping reading it as it closely resembled "Gone Girl" and seemed like a mere replica. However, I didn't anticipate such an ending, which pleasantly surprised me, showing that this book is completely different than Gone girl.

This could've been a novella.
The story is dragged on and out and isn't very clever with the setup for the twist as it was clear after 60+ pages what the reveal would be. The mystery felt lazily done.
Also, the inclusion of transphobia and racism was pointless. Unnecessary, especially coming from Beth, the main protagonist whom you want the reader to sympathize with because she is running away from her abusive husband. Unless you wanted to highlight a flawed protagonist and show that she too is a piece of shit, but that didn't happen—cheap shots and lazy. It sounds very much like a Dave Chapelle comedy routine, pointless, hurtful, stupid, and making me question the writer's views.
Overall, it was very boring with stock characters, especially Beth. She was so bland and this thriller had no energy or steam to keep with the cat-and-mouse setup pace. Eh.

Positively gobsmacked! An audible WHAT?! Came out of my mouth after a completely unexpected bait and switch that was brilliantly done.
