This book is a 12 year old’s idea of what a cool person is. The main character is an insufferable prick with no redeeming qualities. I do not recommend and will not be reading anymore of this author. And for the love of god, if I ever hear the phrase “fuck my face” again, I will puke.

Finally a proper vampire fantasy book, not romantasy but high fantasy. It's vampires in a dark, paranormal, some might say grim with a hint of horror type of a story. Jay Kristoff doesn't hold back, if you were not sure if his books are YA or NA this is different, this is matured adult stuff, the language that Gabriel (morally grey, half vampire worn to protect humanity from the vampires, tells his tale from the cell of the same vampires he vowed to destroy) uses and some battle scenes are explicitly written.

I loved everything about this book, the prose of jumping between the timeline, the twists and the reveals, the humour and the cursing, the art illustrations.

I'm ready for Empire of the Damned.

I love the perspective in this book. Can't wait for the next one. Maybe Gabriel isn't so bad after all?
