Questo è il primo libro di Simenon che ha come protagonista Maigret e, come sempre, ci racconta una Francia che non esiste più, con tutti i pregi e i difetti, non ultima una certa concezione un po’ razzista che sicuramente era cosa comune all’epoca.
Maigret è un poliziotto particolare, ruvido e granitico, na con una concezione del suo lavoro particolare: per lui anche il criminale più incallito, prima di essere un criminale e sempre una persona, tanto che Maigret spesso spiazza per gesti gentili e umani anche nei confronti dei suoi avversari, pur rimanendo ovviamente un poliziotto e ricorrendo anche alla forza, se necessaria.
La prosa di Sinenon è asciutta e senza fronzoli, a volte al limite della freddezza, ma che al momento giusto fa scattare l’emozione nel lettore. La storia narrata è complicata e non del tutto riuscita; a mio avviso qualche particolare non viene chiarito del tutto - da qui le tre stelle e mezzo -, ma il libro è godibile. Non il miglior Simenon, ma pur sempre un libro piacevole (e leggendolo non si può fare a meno di rivedere mentalmente il commissario del grande Gino Cervi).

My first time reading an Inspector Maigret novel and I have to say I quite enjoyed it. A very fun and enjoyable plot. Quite a short book but with over 70 books in the series, there will be a lot to enjoy.
I know there is a television adaptation featuring Rowan Atkinson as Maigret, that is the jarring thing for me, he seems polar opposite to how Maigret is physically described in the book.
For a first book it was a good start and I am sure I will be reading many more of these.
