Went in not really knowing what to expect. I don't think the two main characters change all that much to be honest. There's oodles of miscommunication, mistakes, both struggle with some form of depression/anxiety; this is kind of an anti-romance I think. Not that it's saying that romance is unachievable, but because a relationship shouldn't be the goal in itself. It terms of interior narration this is top-notch. In terms of story... I suppose I was hoping for something more definitive. More closure perhaps.

I did have a problem with just how evil Alan was. He just seemed to exist to be evil... without much going on with him in the background. He pops up at opportune moments to drag Marianne down, but didn't seem to exist as a person outside of that. I didn't need a full on backstory, or for him to have a 'reason' for his awful, abusive ways... he just seemed very one-dimensional to me.

Normal People is one of the most visceral, relatable, and psychologically fulfilling books I have ever read. Its writing style is witty (sometimes too witty) and its structure is certainly awkward in some places (lack of quotes withstanding), but it captures the rawness of its emotions and the depth of its characters with such detail and grit that I could feel the pages staring into my soul. While its focal point runs in circles, its characters and tone certainly don't. 4/5, would recommend!
