Loved this book.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It wasn’t a typical KA book.

I’ll admit that I was a little hesitant to read it because it’s classified as a Fantasy romance. But I was really surprised that it was more of a mix of contemporary, historical (like) with some paranormal aspects. Now, I don’t claim to know the official definitely of “Fantasy” novels, but I wasn’t expecting what I got.

And have to say that while there were typical KA elements (he’s a hot hero), this was, in a way, more refined. I’m not sure if it was because it felt like a mix of contemporary and historical or what. The KA alpha behaviors that can bother me in her other books, worked in this. Maybe because the environment, or world is more similar to historical novels. Where it was common behavior for the men to be more dominant and the ruling class, creating all the rules and expecting to be obeyed. In some ways, her contemporary heroes are more...caveman than the guy that lives in a more "primitive" time of this series.

Everything about this book worked for me. Yes, Frey had his irritating moments when I wanted to smack him, but I loved him and Finny together. They had so much chemistry. And Finny was so spunky and strong. She was my type of character! Especially when she went all Dexter on someone! I was cheering for her when that happened.

I have to say that while I had my suspicions as to who the bad guy was, I wasn’t completely right. But I did call part of it. And I have to say that reading this book after reading Beck by Harper Sloan and that cryfest, I was totally not prepared for the deaths that happened in this book. But I can’t say I regret it because it was awesome from start to finish.

1 ⭑ - Not for me

Here are my 2 concluding thoughts after I finished reading this book:

1. There's a bit of a sexist and misogynistic attitude coming from the ML that he isn't ever held accountable for and it's just kind of glossed over. The one thing the FL gets mad at him for is for sleeping with other people before they met, which just left me staring into space like this for a minute:

Out of all the questionable things he has said and done, you get mad at that??????????

2. Take a shot every time the FL says 'cool'.

Im torn on how to review this as overall i really enjoyed the experience of reading this book, however that doesn't make it without flaw.

It was a rollercoaster of emotions that took me all over the place, the premise is really interesting and the world as the main character would say is "Super Cool". and therein lies my issue throughout this whole book. The main characters says the most stupid shit that doesn't work in the context of this world (which i understand was the point). but damn was it still annoying and took me about half the book to get over.

I would still however recommend it, it's a solid read just be prepared for alot of "OMG, So Cool, Awesome, Thats Sick... etc" in a high fantasy setting.

Even better the second time!

not the author for me

I noped out of this book less than two chapters in. The writing is infantile and absolutely awful.
