Jan 5, 2017: I was disappointed with this book. I thought Pawn was interesting enough, but I feel like not a lot happens in Captive. It didn’t hold my attention as well as the first book did. I think for as big of a part of Kitty’s life as Benjy is, he’s still a very underdeveloped character, and so is their relationship. I wanted more Knox in this book. I also still feel like I need to be shown a bit more proof of Kitty being this kickass heroine. I hope the finale in the trilogy is good.
I have been waiting for almost a year to read this second book to the Blackcoats rebellion and to be honest i sooo wasn't disappointed. This is one trilogy I am excited about how it will end. Aimee Carter doesn't give anything away about the things upcoming. I think I read it too quickly coz I loved it.
So we start with Kitty - now Lila Hart who is playing the part but also acting like a spoilt girl all the time. Knox her pretend fiancee was awesome in this.I loved his character in this story, and secretly i think he loves Kitty but cant have her.
Kitty in this book although a strong character was annoying in some bits as I felt like i needed to slap her a few times or glue her mouth shut. But as usual the story had everything, there were moments of tenderness, tears, laughter, death..... and action was not a miss. I like how the characters lace together, its a story i would read over and over again.

Ama Vezir'i iyi atlattık.

Really enjoy Aimee Carter's stuff, and a fantastic sequel. Full review to come.

This book surpasses the first one in the series. With Pawn, I wasn't jumping to read the next installment. Now, I'm desperate to read Queen. the first book shows all the luxury and beauty of Kitty's world. In Pawn, we are taken on a heart wrenching drive though an underground of dispair. You don't know what to believe or who to trust. You will be hooked from the first like to the last. No one is safe. Nothing is sacred. Everyone is replaceable.

On the one hand, I like the story and want to know where it's going. On the other hand, Kitty is such a poorly written character that I don't know if I can stand another book in her head.
Mir hat der zweite Band SO viel besser gefallen, als der erste!
Captive by Aimee Carter was very disappointing. All the action that should've been there, wasn't and that was the disappointing part about it. Pawn is probably the reason I feel this way. The ending of that book, had my fingers itching to get a copy of this book, and now that I've read, I feel like I itched for no reason. Kitty was so stuck up, like she actually believed that she was actually Lila Hart. She acted like she was irreplaceable, even though she was a replacement. The characters lacked emotional depth, Kitty only cared about Benjy, and when something happened to him, she had a vendetta against everyone that had anything to do with it. This book wasn't full of twist and turns like the review on the cover of the book said. I wouldn't really recommend this book to anybody that I have befriended, an enemy maybe, but never a friend. I'm not trying to down Aimee's profession, but this book was a let down, but that's definitely not going to stop me from reading the last book to find out how this mess ends.

Jesus Christ, was the author Masked between books one and two? Review to come.

A summary of Captive:
Everyone: "Kitty, no"
Kitty: "KITTY YES!"
Captive is one of my more frustrating reading experiences. I loved the first book because it felt like a real dystopian, with deadly stakes, and yet in this book, I felt the death toll was meaningless and an excuse for cheap drama.
Part of that is because, And that’s not the only time something similar happens. Deaths fall into two categories: fakeout and fridge.
The book feels directionless. The Blackcoats don’t seem to have a clear mission or plan for the future government. They also don’t seem to have any communication with other members, outside the capital, causing the end of the book to be a shitshow of mammoth proportions. I’m not invested in the “love triangle”, because Kitty has made it perfectly clear that she’s not in love with one of the men. There’s no more tension or drama to wring out of the situation. And then there’s Kitty’s actions.
I’m not kidding, Kitty must promise not to [do the thing], only to immediately turn around and do it, a half dozen times. “Don’t look for this incriminating document.” “I found and hid the incriminating document!” “Don’t look for this second incriminating document.” “I found and hid the incriminating document!” “Don’t run into battle with a broken arm.” “I’m running into battle…!” I have never been more bored with a storytelling device.
There are still kernels of good ideas in Captive. Caste systems are not easy to pull off and I do feel they’re deployed very well here. I actually have a lot of respect for Knox; he’s one of the better leaders in the genre. Daxton without his “mother’s” reigns is appropriately villainous. But, Elsewhere was better in book one. I don’t think the expansion was necessary or half as frightening.
Everyone knows the second book in a trilogy is generally the weakest, so I’ll still pick up Queen, but I’m nowhere near as excited about the series as I was before I read Captive.

Spoiler
Knox, in an effort to endear himself the PM, shoots Benjy, Kitty’s boyfriend from her old life, in front of her and Daxton. It’s brutal and not something that can be faked. Benji shows up alive about 3 chapters later. Knowing this, I’m forced to suppose that a) Knox had Benjy Masked, because why the fuck not at this point? b) Benjy’s a master actor who can suppress involuntary actions like blinking AND Daxton is so dumb he doesn’t know bullet wounds bleed, or c) Knox’s gun released a toxin that caused everyone to mass hallucinate that Benjy was dead. This option is my favorite, being the only possible explanation for why I kept reading after the reveal. The book feels directionless.
