I don't even really want to write out a review for this one, but I try to always say something on a book so let's not stop now!!
This series has a lot of potential, but a lot of it is squandered on a too stupid to live MC, overly used plot twists, and over simplification.
This really should be a 2 star read for just how stupid a lot of it is, but I did want to keep reading, and it really picked up for the last 2/3s to where I keep wanting to read on and find out what was happening. So I'm pretty torn. I will be picking up the finale when it comes out though to see how it all ends. But God I really can't stand Kitty Doe. TOO. STUPID. TO. LIVE.

A solid second book in a series that reveals enough, introduces new characters, answers questions, brings new twists, and ends with a reveal that will have the reader clamoring for the final book. Aimee Carter writes exciting books with pacing that leaves the reader unable to stop turning pages. The world she has created in The Blackcoat Rebellion series is one that is frightening, fantastical, yet all too believable with characters the reader will root for. There is commentary about politics, celebrity, power, caste systems, societal norms, rich vs. poor, waste of resources, and the normalizing of violence. All of that is intertwined with a young girl seeking to be normal and allowed to love who she wants, while having to pretend to be someone else. While Kitty fights for her freedom, she begins to find the strength she has herself and what she truly values most. As she battles with becoming a part of the rebellion or just living her life, she struggles to figure out who and what really matters. As Knox at one time points out, some people put people over ideals, while others put ideals over individual people, which is the crux of Kitty's journey to finding her place in this second book. Can she be the face of a rebellion, can she be who she truly is, can she fight for what she believes, can she be true to the people who matter to her, can she impact a nation, can she do what's needed? Captive is all about choices, and reminds us that, "...death is inevitable for all of us. The only thing that really matters in the end is how we choose to live."
I absolutely adored Pawn the first book in The Blackcoat Rebellion series but Captive took this series to a whole another level of goodness. I'm always a little hesitant to pick up the second book since a lot of series suffer from the second book syndrome but not Captive, it was actually better then Pawn.
Captive was a lot more darker and a lot more violent. There were so many twists and turns that I didn't know what to expect. Kitty's world has become even more hostile then what it was in Pawn. She ends up in the one place she feared the most Elsewhere and just when she thought all was lost she finds allies in the most unlikely of all places. We meet more new characters and some I really liked but don't think about getting attached to the characters in this book, Carter has no issues killing characters off which of course made it more realistic and that much better.
I liked Kitty from the first book already but I found myself having an extra dose of respect for her after reading Captive. Just when I thought she would crumble and be a complete mess she showed strength and determination more then ever ready to do whatever it took and putting the fate of everyone else above her wants and needs. She really went through it in Captive between the lies, secrets, and betrayals she couldn't trust a soul just when she thought she found herself trusting someone they would turn around and betray her or worse and I loved her even more after the fact because she just dusted off her bruised feelings and kept focusing on what was important.
The romance...that is where I have had an issue with in this series so far even in Pawn and now in Captive I don't feel the chemistry between her and Benjy at all. To me I just get this friend vibe between the two even with all their kissing and sweet words I just don't believe it. Then there is Knox well my goodness that boy was infuriating in the worst way there is nothing between Kitty and Knox in this book whatsoever except for rude exchanges of words but there was a hint of something and honestly I would love that to grow to be more in the next book just because even though I don't know what to make of Knox anymore one thing is for sure he is a hell of a lot more interesting of a character then Benjy ever has been.
There were quite a few things that happened that has me very excited for the next book. With the way things ended I can't wait to see what Carter has in store for us in Queen which is the next book in the series. Overall captive was amazing and even better then Pawn. If you haven't picked this series up yet I highly recommend you do so.

4.5 Kitty and Knox both drove me crazy at times, but another great book. I love the story, it's so fast and easy to read and good characters. Diving straight into the next one!

Captive is a well-written and entertaining sequel to [b:Pawn|10838787|Pawn (The Blackcoat Rebellion, #1)|Aimee Carter|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1374097236s/10838787.jpg|15753006]. Aimee Carter manages to keep this story as action-packed and full of twists and turns as its predecessor, making it almost impossible to put down.
If you had something to tie you back to your old life, would you keep it or destroy it?It's been two months since Kitty Doe has been Masked into the Prime Minister's niece, Lila. And now it's finally time for Kitty to begin feeding the flames of the rebellion Lila began before her "death". But is she prepared to pay the ultimate price ensure the rebellion succeeds?
Kitty is an easy character to sympathize for, but she's not always the most likable. She makes some very questionable decisions over the course of this story that put her and those she cares for in jeopardy. Yet, even despite her poor decisions, it's hard not to root for her and the cause she is fighting for.
Where the story lacks is in the complexity of the characters. The characters have certain personality traits and characteristics that distinguish them, but they aren't complex enough to feel like real people.
In conclusion, this is a very high-stakes continuation of Kitty's story. I am anxious to see what happens next in [b:Queen|25246657|Queen (The Blackcoat Rebellion #3)|Aimee Carter|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1438904049s/25246657.jpg|42241880].
An armory isn't always made up of guns and knives. Sometimes, information is the most powerful weapon of all.
I didn't quite like the characterization of Kitty
