Jade annoys me to the point where I do not care what is happening at Indian Lake.

2.75. I liked the book enough to listen all the way through. But I found it hard to follow because the narrator/main character rambles all of her thoughts so much in her story telling. I felt like I was listening to my nerdiest friend talk about their most impassioned subject for a lot of the book and I was just waiting for the bits that moved the story along. It was exciting but I am still unsure of who the killer was. Was it a metaphor. Was it literal and supernatural ? Am I too dense for the book? Maybe. My least favorite character of all horror movies is Randy in Scream. And this book is very much an ode to that character and love for horror nerds. Which is great and they should have all the love but I feel like I’ve heard all of this stuff before so the repeated genre talk sort of clogged the book from moving along in my opinion. There were many interesting stories to explore within the story itself that never really took off. I found myself wondering more about those dynamics and less about going over what final girls do and slasher film rules.

Why did I hate this? I’m honestly not sure. I found it so boring despite having many things I liked in it.
I’ve had awful luck with horror this year.

This is the worst book I’ve ever finished. I hated every single page.

A master class ! A poignant and wonder love letter to Slasher films, while also being darkly emotional. SGJ has now become an autobuy author and I will be gradually reading all his books because this was wonderful.
Jade Daniels is such a great character, flawed yet really likeable, and her love of slasher films was excellent. Usually I dont like overt pop culture references in stories but this was done so well, and worked into the the thesis of the story, and it added this added depth (It could also be that I adore essays on horror, as its my fav genre).
I really liked the mystery and the slow ticking dread, showing us what it would be like to be a teen in town with a serial killer/slasher. I wasnt sure at first of the dynamic of how the kills were done but actually by mid way in I was like "this is realistic and makes sense, and I really love only being in Jades POV"
Ive been waiting a while to read this, and Im so glad I've finally read it. Gonna read book 2 soon, and hope the audio for 3 is out in the UK so I can immersion read it also.
