Took me awhile to finish this one due to a job change that leaves me unable to read during breaks and stuff, but my goodness what an experience. This is the most poignant and timely book I've read in a number of years, the language is so pure. The point of view shifts are timely, and the journey is filled with so much emotion, but ultimately hope and wrapped completely in love.
I adored this novel and think it is a must read. I would put it in High School and University reading lists immediately as well!

Important story about immigration and families being separated but it read very slow and lacked some character development. There was so much potential for so many of the characters and I’m disappointed it only lightly touched on each of the kids. 3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Following two generations of immigrants using a broken timeline and not much dialogue, it would seem I would be completely lost in this novel, but it complete sucked me in. It moves quickly. Some years are covered in a few pages. It's an interesting story that feels true.
It was enjoyable, but I wanted more from it than I got. It’s less than 200 pages. I would have liked more, in general.
I didn’t think I would give this book 5 stars until I completed it. This book speaks for our era in history as Americans. It speaks to anyone who doesn’t believe that immigrants are people whose lives should be valued. This book personifies the struggle of immigrants. It was beautifully written and will stay with me for some time.
Very thought provoking while giving inside look at the plight of immigrants and split families.
A very short, but very impactful book. Also very relevant, now and probably for many years to come. This is the story of a Columbian family divided by the US immigration laws. Mauro and Elena, hopeful for a safer and better life in the US, make the difficult decision immigrate to the US and become undocumented workers. What unfolds is a series of events that divides the couple and their children to come. It's a universal story, one that is heartbreakingly relatable to so many humans. I did have troubles following the story at times as the narration is jumpy and sometimes I didn't know who was story telling. I think this book could have been a much harder (ie. sadder) read had it not had this "fairytale-ness" to it in it's telling. Or maybe this makes it a more appealing read for readers to digest. Either way, worth reading, especially since it's not a large time investment.
The writing was beautiful, the story was memorable and it was a book that grabbed me from the beginning and just didn’t let go.
Short and impactful.
