This was so well written and have a great insight into the experience of immigrants coming to the US and the struggle of it all. I would highly recommend it, such a wonderful book.

Loved every single moment of this novel -- gorgeous writing, heartfelt dialogue, amazing characters, and a story that should be read by all. Truly loved this.

It was okay. For a novel ostensibly about immigration, it really left the topic to the end. I mean, for much of the novel, the person I considered the main character, Talia, is on the run IN Colombia, fleeing the pursuit of the authorities after breaking out a girls prison/school after attacking a man with boiling oil (after the man himself killed a street cat in a similar fashion). Given how violent and seemingly diabolical Colombia is characterized, I find it a minor miracle that Talia wasn't victimized while she hitchhiked across the country. She made it to the airport and her family in the states just in time. The really glossed over the next part, that of her adapting to her family and the States, and the end felt a little rushed. "Then dad saved up, flew to Cuba, then Mexico, snuck over and we're a family again!" I coulda used more, the book was surprisingly short.
great book. awesome first novel. compelling story, lots of twists and turns, really intense and beautiful.
Simply phenomenal.

I feel badly that I didn’t really like this book because the topic is really important. I just didn’t care for the writing and I never became attached to the characters at all.
The language in this book is poetic, descriptive, full of similes. The first half made me miss Colombia and the second half reminded me again and again why our immigration system is so depressing and infuriating. At it's heart a book about family.

I loved this book. It was a deeply moving story about life as an immigrant in the United States from Colombia, the devastation about separating families due to deportation, and love for family persevering. We see the story of mother and father along with their 3 children--two residing in Colombia with their mother and one child in Colombia with their father. The alternating POVs were wonderfully done. It's a heavy read with a trigger warning for assault, but a story that I enjoyed so much.
