Good quick read, well done & both heartwrenching and heartwarming
Stunning writing. Like wow. I think this book will be one I come back to for quotes again. Like I don't think there is a closing line of a book I love more than "And maybe there is no nation or citizenry: they're just territories mapped in place of family, in place of love, the infinite country."
Grounding, quiet, beautiful. The ending, choked on a sob, had me wondering who are men that control the land and the life of other men and why is this so hard to figure out? The story certainly gave me a different perspective of the intricacies of immigration beyond who stays and who goes and made it all very human. The very best of books allow us to see humanity.
Wow, I finished this book last night and I'm still wrapping my head around how amazing it was. The story focuses on a family originally from Colombia, who reside in both the US and Colombia. Without giving too much away, the story focuses on Talia's journey to the US to live with her mother and siblings. Talia has never known her siblings or mother as she was sent back to Colombia to live with her dad who was deported from the US. Engel's story telling ability is phenomenal, her ability to weave in stories of Colombian folklore into the main storyline was something I did not expect but quickly became one of my favorite parts of the book.
The ending truly ripped into my soul, I sobbed over the last twenty pages, I sobbed so much I left water marks in the book. The strong father daughter relationship as well as family's dealing with the repercussion of the US's immigration system are something that will always tug on my heart strings.
I hope everyone finds time to read this book, its relatively short, only 190 pages so it's a fairly quick read.

What a heartbreaking story about immigrants and deportation. This was a really emotional novel about one family in two countries. The unwavering love and family bond was so special. I did at times get confused when the perspective changed and they didn’t tell me haha
