I let this book settle before judging it. This is an emotional subject and story that I didn’t feel the emotion. There was just something that didn’t click with me. I still gained some insight about how immigrants feel, but overall it wasn’t told in a way that I emotionally connected with the story.

Its hard to find exactly what I want to say about this book. It taught me that I know nothing of the struggles of other people. Or what people are going through....beautifully written and eye opening.

I won't lie that it took me a bit to get into this book, but by the end my heart was torn open for a family that fought with every part of them - patience, perseverance, strategy, and most important, love. The pieces come together slowly throughout the novel to create a complicated immigration journey that is made into tragedy by US policy and practices. The story reminds us of how arbitrary and deadly borders can be, and that not everyone is born into a situation where they simply get to be with their family at all times. This books brings to light so many questions of what it means to be free, how some fight for their family, and what home feels like.
