Beautiful and moving short novel. Who can resist a book with this first sentence: "It was Talia's idea to tie up the nun."

Pretty heavy-handed at the end, but overall a short, touching story about a family across borders.

3.5 stars. This is a very character-driven narrative, rather than a plot-driven narrative, so there isn’t much of a climax. This wouldn’t be so bad, except that it’s difficult to connect with any of the characters when they jump around between voices so often, and the book is so short. If the book were longer, the author could have spent more time diving into each character and allowing the reader to invest in each one. The way it is, I felt like we just skimmed the surface of each of them, never getting to really connect with any. The chapters told from the points of view of Talia’s siblings seemed out-of-place. I did enjoy the topic and reading about it from this point of view, but I think the story could have been told in a better way.
