Cormac McCarthy is infuriating

Absolutely loved it

Old paint on an old sign said dimly to keep out. Someone must have turned it around because it posted the outer world. He went on anyway. He said that he was only passing through.

This is perhaps the worst book I've ever forced myself to finish. Blows my mind that the same guy who wrote The Road can write this meandering drivel. So pointless.

Incredible read, instant favorite

3.75 stars. Good story but a bit difficult to read. I've read Kerouac and Cervantes and I will put this book in that category. The first 30 pages are brutal but the story picks up shortly thereafter. This was my first foray with Cormac McCarthy. I was drawn to the book because of its setting in Knoxville, my hometown and I wasn't disappointed by the rambling descriptions of the city and surrounding area in the early 1950s. Good book overall, but I wouldn't read it again.

Of the three McCarthy books I’ve read thus far, (Child of God/Blood Meridian) this one has some of his best prose, in my opinion. The book doesn’t really have much of a straight forward plot but is more about McCarthy’s self-insert character encountering and interacting with other crazy characters in his Knoxville, Tennessee life. He meets all sorts of schemers, alcoholics, and charlatans, and while there isn’t much of a linear plot, so many crazy things happen throughout the story. The end is top tier, good to just relax and take your time with.
