Beautifully written. I mean I would expect that a book written by Obama’s Chief Speechwriter would be written beautifully, but this surpassed my expectations.
First I loved the format of the book. Instead of looking at his time with Obama over his whole presidency, he focused on a pivotal ten days of the administration, but referenced enough history and previous moments in his life and the Administration and the President’s to pain the picture. To help us better understand and connect to those ten days.
The funny thing is, I remember those ten days and what was happening in the country, and many of those speeches (or moments from them). But to hear the work behind those ten days was amazing.
I also connected so deeply with this book. I write for a living (fundraising storytelling) and hearing Cody’s process and how it was so similar to mine, made me feel better about the countless hours I spend staring at a blank screen or doing anything but the writing, until that inspiration hits and then it’s like “get out of my way and leave me alone I’ll write all night if I have to!”
Most importantly though, this book made me remember a time when this country was full of hope. And positivity. And made me question how we’d ever get there again. Listening to many of these speeches again made me long for those years back. But also left me feeling hopeful.
But most of all it made me remember that whether in life or in my writing, leave space, and live and write with grace.

Really enjoyed the memoir. Interesting and insightful look into the Obama Whitehouse. Ended up going back and watching a lot of his speeches as I read along.
