Account of Obama administration from his chief speechwriter. Informative, well-paced, and engaging read about his response to the Charleston massacre. Enjoyed the writer’s effective prose, as well as the “behind the scenes” feeling this book brought. Has noticeable neoliberal bias but you know what you’re getting into when you pick up a book by Obama’s chief speechwriter.

Did you know that the Supreme Court decisions on the Affordable Care Act and Marriage equality and the Charleston shooting all happened within ten days of each other? I didn’t realize , so often news blurs and blends into our lives and we forget the pacing of it. This memoir of the former  speech writer for Obama, Cody Keenan, seeks to remind us what a pressure cooker of a time that was for history. Also imagine having to write a winning and losing result for both of those historic cases where so many livelihood’s are at stake, plus a eulogy that condemns domestic terrorism and still gives hope. The inside historical account is compelling and the insight into speech writing is just as interesting - although I wish there was more of this. It was fun to read how the President and Keenan collaborated to make words matter.  Highly recommend the audio- Keenan’s Obama impression is good.

Of course a book by a speechwriter is funny, insightful, and moving. This book gave a little window into a ten day period that had major highs & lows for both the White House team and America.
