This was like reading an episode of The West Wing. Interesting. Hopeful. Well worth my time.

If you miss Obama, if you enjoyed the West Wing, if you believe we are better together, and in the power of language to uplift, encourage, and create change... Read this book! It was a freaking delight.

"That's when America soars. When we look out for one another. When we take care of each other. When we root for one another's success. When we strive to do better and to be better than the generation that came before us and try to build something better for generations to come." (p. 193)

Keenan invites the reader to step into the world of the most powerful man on earth, with loads of imagery and in-depth conversations. He extrapolates a lot of dialogue, often giving details that would be better left out. Despite this, I did tear up a few times throughout the latter portion of the novel — the last chapter alone makes this book worth reading.

I truly miss the Obamas and his administration.

I feel like he truly cared about all these people that he worked with, and cared about their thoughts. And I always loved his speeches. Getting to know his speechwriter, Cody Keenan, and the relationship they had over that time was such a privilege.

Whether or not you know his Amazing Grace eulogy speech for Clementa C. Pinckney, or some of his other last speeches, this book highlights the conversations and collaborative ideas that Obama and his speechwriter had.

And remembering the first time that we were this frightened over the possibility of a backwards future, this felt comforting and reassuring.

Democratic National Convention, Remarks by the President (7.28.16)

“…That’s why anyone who threatens our values, whether fascists or communists or jihadists or homegrown demagogues, will always fail in the end.
That is America. That is America. Those bonds of affection; that common creed. We don’t fear the future; we shape it. We embrace it, as one people, stronger together than we are on our own.”

I’m crying.

I received an advanced copy of this book. I do enjoy reading about the day to day life that takes place behind the scenes in politics. Cody Keenan does a beautiful job of combining those stories with the story of writing a very difficult speech for President Obama. The format of the book was the perfect choice because it allowed the reader to feel the emotional aspect of writing multiple speeches at the same time. An excellent read for anyone interested in the power of words.
