Dec 2022 reread- honestly such a good story for how short this book is. Not a page wasted and nothing rushed
_____

Nov 2019 reread- just as lovely a second time through
_____

A very beauty-and-the-beast-style story, which I will never say no to. I liked Sylvia and I sympthized with her and her story. She was proud and hard working and was willing to try to make a life for herself instead of relying on others fo her every need. The fact that she was willing to humble herself from a baron's daughter to a working-class family's governess. And even though life hadn't been kind to her she was still kind and caring, instead of wallowing in self pity and taking it out on others. Very respectable character.

Sebastian on the other hand, was very prone to wallowing and taking his resentment out on others. As well as projecting his feelings and opinions of himself onto others. But it didn't make him an unlikable character. His abrasive personality is completely fitting. It makes sense for what he has been through and he gradually grows and improves throughout the story.
He was willing to go outside his comfort zone for her and in the end, I was really happy how things turned out.

3.5 stars. This was a short story with not so much meat to it. I normally really enjoy this author but this was not one of her best book. It could have also done with more of an epilogue.

I received an advanced digital copy of The Last Letter in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

When I initially picked up this book, I was looking to read a historical fiction, but not a historical romance. Romance books are typically not my thing, but this was a sweet, quick read. It did drive me a little nuts because I kept rooting for the main characters to practice better communication and just outright ask the other why there were no responses to their letters. But alas, book characters do not listen to readers and open communication between men and women was not common in Victorian England.

While I have a couple blogging friends who have gushed over Ms. Matthews stories for a good while now, I confess to having tried a couple and not really been able to get into them. Except for A Holiday by Gaslight which is just DELIGHTFUL. And I finally found another that I loved! Yay! With a bit of Beauty and the Beast vibes going on, Sylvia and Sebastian's romance is awfully adorable. Even when Sebastian is being an idiot. :) Sweet and fun, this is one you need in your life, reader friends. Especially if you adore reunited lovers tropes.

Overall a really excellent and perfect book for me. Unfortunately there was ONE trigger in it for me, so that's the only reason it can't be 5 star.

Cute but too short. And no epilogue (which is a crime)

While the prose and atmosphere here is what I would expect from Mimi Matthews, this story lacked some of the depth of her later books. It’s a fine book but it’s clear how much she has grown as a storyteller since this one.

It’s a quick read at only about 200 pages, and a sweet take on the beauty and the beast storyline. I felt a lack of connection with the two main characters, but it’s a wholesome and cute story at the end of the day.

I loved this angsty little book. My favorite of Mimi Matthew’s so far. I don’t mind a misunderstanding trope as long as it is done well, and this one was. The writing was superb. I only wish it was longer. This one might be one for the keeper shelf.
