Auxiliary Challenge™ 2018 winner for June over at Fallen Into Tijan Books -- Theme: Time Travel

Bloody Hell, this book..

This was in my list for a loooong time amd I really wanted to get to it. Now that I have I am not sorry cause this was great!

Quick points: It was British thru & thru, which is not for everyone. It was great for me. The plot was ok, nothing special but not boring. Characters I liked and liked to hate. Fucking insanity, fuck-uppery & such a disregard for Health amd Safety regulations! Max & Leon are a stupidly adorable couple!

But there were things that miffed me: Some character actions & behaviours just for the sake of it most notably, some leaps & bounds out of nowhere, and some moments that were great keys turned into Haste Paste™ and promptly brushed off.

All in all though this was a great First! I mean you get methane, fresh dang and the on-the-fly homemade flamethrower fashioned off of an industrial vacuum cleaner and a large milk jug. *Boom*

This was a fun, fast paced page turner. That being said, I read it two months ago and it's already faded away into the back of my mind. Nothing groundbreaking just light brainless fun.

Not too attached to it to bother reading the rest of the series.

Fun enough for me to pick up the next one, but a little erratic in tone. There's a jump from "whoopsie, we're all eccentric tea-drinking historians here!" to more violent death and dismemberment stuff. Also, the impact of actually seeing history, which is supposed to be one of the big draws to becoming a historian who risks one's life daily, somehow comes off a little muted compared to the more fun shenanigans back home in St. Mary's.

There's a definite Connie Willis and Kage Baker influence, but they do better with the atmosphere of witnessing history. I'll go ahead and read the next one, and will probably be happy with it, but that may be enough for me.
