After reading the first book, I was so excited to continue reading the adventures of Leena, Noc and their merry band of assassins. However, as soon as I started reading this book I noticed the writing was different to the first book, which threw me. After some googling I discovered that the first book was originally written as an adult romantasy, which was later rewritten as a YA and continued for the remainder of the series.

I really wish the series had continued to be for an adult audience. In my view, the shift from adult to YA was extremely detrimental to the series and I really struggled to finish this book.

I love the world Maxym M. Martineau has created. The concept is so good and had so much potential. There were aspects of the plot that had me enthralled, but the execution fell short and the story became extremely predictable.

Also the character development that was in the first book, was lost in this one because there really wasn’t any.

The chemistry between all of the characters was flat, particularly between Leena and Noc. There was no relationship building and the romance in this book was underwhelming. I think this is attributed to the acceleration of the romantic plot and the striping back of the romance to cater a YA audience. The romantic relationship between Noc and Leena just wasn’t compelling for me.

I really disliked Leena for the majority of this book. At parts she sounded like a petulant child. It seemed that with the shift to YA, Leena was written to be younger than what she actually is. I found some of her reactions to be immature.

I was also disappointed that one of my favourite characters from the first book was missing for about 90% of this book and their absence is extremely noticeable.

I also found that there were references to a number of people that were only briefly and sporadically mentioned in the first book, which seemed to have more importance in this book. The issue is that during the first book these people don’t seem overly important to what is going on at the time, so you don’t necessarily pay much attention to them. So when they were mentioned in this book, I had to go back to the first book to figure out who they were, because there weren’t any details provided. It would have been helpful to have a brief explanation as to who these people were and their importance to the story. It is almost like there needs to be a prequel to give more information about these people. I have to say the prequel story of the First King, Zane, Mavis and the First War would be an interesting read, provided it is executed well.

This book introduces the POV’s of some of the sub-characters. In my view these chapters were a complete waste of chapter time, because they didn’t really add anything of substance, besides making it blatantly obvious who their love interests are going to be. That information could have been delivered another way. It was completely unnecessary to have those POV chapters. Instead the POV chapters could have been about what was happening at Hireath, which would have made more sense and been more interesting. I feel that that was a missed opportunity.

I so wanted to love this book, but I just didn’t and found that I really had to push myself to finish it.
