The companion to THE MITTEN, this feels like a folk tale, but I think it may be original to Brett. In any case, some animals in a snowy Scandinavian woods find a woolen sock and think it's a hat. Hedgie the hedgehog is particularly enamored with the "hat" and goes to great lengths to keep it.

Hedgie just wants to wear his hat for the love of god.

Read as part of 2nd grade author study. Then, to Kindergarden as part of sequencing unit. We love side pictures!

Beautiful, European (Nordic?) illustrations and a cute story. I liked most the side bar and extra illustration boxes that gave little hints of what was going to happen on the next page. My kids especially liked the hedgehog.

Ridiculously cute and charming. Brett does such a good job of taking the simple thing of an animal's mistake and using it to explore themes of embarrassment and friendship. The accompanying illustrations are first-rate, gorgeous and incredibly intricate as usual.

The text isn't much, certainly too repetitive. And the idea wouldn't seem to have much to it. But it was executed so well. And the art is cute. And the book just basically works.
