I like to read this and/or her version of the Mitten. I explain to the students how Jan Brett researches habitats and I show how I know her stories take place in the Ukraine. We go to World Book and Culture Grams and start in the Ukraine and then visit other stories like Baltic and then other places.

Another good read for storytime. I like Jan's books because there is foreshadowing on the sides and in this book there is something going on with the clothesline at the top of the book.

Cute story but not as charming as The Mitten. Beautiful illustrations though.

What a delightful read-aloud! Children love to figure out what's going to happen next, as the illustrations are absolutely beautiful and provide plenty of visual foreshadowing.

The illustrations in this rather simple tale are beautiful. The foreshadowing of what the next animal will be as well as what the young girl is doing are nice touches. Honesty, if you like hedgehogs check this out.

Jan Brett writes a beautiful story but the true star of the show are her gorgeous illustrations. I love how the stunning art in the central picture is augmented by the secondary story being told in the images in the side bar. She is a tee master of her craft.

really lovely illustrations in this book. I loved the old timey feel of airing out your woollies for winter.

The Hat is a cute story about embarrassment, friendship and popularity. As with Bringing Down the Moon, the main characters are animals. In this one the protagonist is a hedgehog who wants nothing more than to get a stocking off his back before all his friends think he's stupid for wearing such a ridiculous "hat."

Meanwhile, all his friends, having seen his hat on such a cold winter's day see the wisdom of keeping warm and decide to pinch clothing from the woman's laundry line where she had hung her winter woolens to air out. One by one the woman loses her clothing set out to dry: the other stocking, a pair of gloves, a cap, a waistcoat, a sweater and a scarf.

I liked this book because it reminded me of Sean and his friends. Sean will take things he's learned at home and teach his friends and then everyone else is soon doing what he has been doing. Or he'll come home having learned something from his friends. This book captures how children creature their own culture at school perfectly.

Set in the Denmark countryside, this is a tale of animals getting the notion that the too can wear clothes. It's beautifully illustrated and fun to look at all the subtitles in the art that help tell the story, if you are looking carefully.
