Unreadable

For a book with so much violence, this is so boring. Yes the judge is a good character and he can be scary, but his monologues also got tired by the end. This book is mainly men on horses and once again I am forced to recognize that men going places is just not a type of story I like.

Immersive, provoking, philosophical, and wretched. These are some words that come to mind when attempting to grasp Cormac McCarthy’s ‘Blood Meridian’.

Admittedly, it felt more challenging to really get invested this book in the beginning. However, it certainly wasn’t due to a lack of any action, or horror. I found myself asking, where is this really going? Is this just a vile depiction of the west? A landscape littered with men repulsive and craven? However, these thoughts were soon merely dust in the wind as I began to find myself completely engrossed in this rust-hued, butte ridden, terrain.

McCarthy is able to deviate from the romanticism of the ‘Wild West’ and provide a challenging tale of an adventure from hell, one in which the calamity of man is explored and introspected. Characters such as ‘The Judge’ were used as a vessel to deliver profound teachings. The blood soaked scenes of debauchery and violence demonstrate the vices of man allowed to bloom and blossom into some gut-churning life form.

Blood Meridian is a type of book that will never leave you. It will invite you to come back every now and then to assess whether the continuity of your own life allows you to extract a new leson.

The book is hard to rate, and hard to stomach at times. There is brilliance amidst all the bloodshed, and yet its cohesion seems to get drowned in blood as much as its casts’ faith is drowned in the bottle. But, "Is not blood the tempering agent in the mortar that bonds?"

Took me a bit to get into it, but overall a fantastic read. Such a distinct style of writing that fully immerses you into the story. Captures the American southwest so vividly
