I just really don’t think Cormac McCarthy is for me. I didn’t hate The Road, but this one was so unengaging, from the lack of punctuation to the nameless characters. As someone with an interest in history and how America remembers its past, this book intrigued me at first but I was completely let down after starting it. I made it through the first chapter and found it not very compelling and difficult to get through, then thought I would give it a couple more chapters but gave up right after starting the second. I don’t think I will be reading any more of his books.

Opening was strong but by the middle I got really tired of McCarthy’s detailed descriptions of events. It really slowed down the reading in a way that wasn’t enjoyable. He has vision but it’s not one that I find entertaining.

Not for me. Dry, emotionally empty, and surprisingly dull. If you want a book which lists atrocities like a Wikipedia page, I'm sure you'll get something out of this.
It's an impressive book, sure. But not one I enjoyed or got anything from. Skip this one if you prefer more emotional and character-driven stories.

Close to a perfect book, this one. Not that it's great or an amazing unputdownable book, but rather a hard to read but perfectly weighted retelling of how the west was won. The judge stands as a quintessential mirror to our nation. Some might say it's too violent but I suppose at that point you will have to say that's history.
