Slow and a bit hard to follow. You really have to give it your time. Dense and well-written.

A Bleak, Empty Trail
Blood Meridian left me cold. It’s a brutal Western following a group of killers, but the story felt hollow. I couldn’t connect with any character—they were flat, with no growth. The endless killing had no purpose, just violence for its own sake, leaving me empty. There’s no redemption, love, or compassion, nothing to hold onto. The prose was chunky—overdone on scenery and gore but thin on character depth. I wanted to care, but I didn’t. At 3 stars, I’m being generous—it’s my lowest McCarthy yet. I’d hoped for more heart on this grim trail.
