It's an important book, but the mindless violence was too relentless. I only got about two-thirds of the way through before I had to abandon it, though. I'm sure the mindless violence is part of the point of the book, but a little goes a long way with me.

As the description says, a horribly violent novel, and it succeeds in disgusting the reader with the depravity of the time and place, and there is no redemption and no protagonist. No one learns anything, and the final summation is that war and death are enduring. If the purpose of the book was to dispel the myth of the romantic west, it could have been done in half the words. Yet the author carries us through carnage after senseless carnage, only to have the main character succomb in the end in a submission to the death that has been central to his life. He tries to escape it weakly and ineffectual and is carried by it throughout the book. And then he dies, and the symbol of death and war endures.
Beautiful prose contrasted with horrific violence. Perfectly captures the American ethos.

This book was very dark and depressing. An interesting take on one of the most darkest times in American history. I found the Judge to be a pretty interesting yet disgusting character. Overall, I had no idea what was going on in the story.
