a near perfect southern gothic piece of literature. this contained some of my favorite grotesque descriptions i’ve ever read.

“the murdered lay in a great pool of their communal blood. it had set up into a sort of pudding crossed everywhere with the tracks of wolves or dogs and along the edges it had dried and cracked into a burgandy ceramic. blood lay in dark tongues on the floor and blood grouted the flagstones and ran in the vestibule where the stones were cupped from the feet of the faithful and their fathers before them”

Violent brutal and in offering of no reprieve. This book does a lot and nothing at all in its entirety. The plot itself is hard to even map out as it’s basically a travel log that changes the group after each outing. They don’t really change character wise as their beginning is how they stay, but in a book like this I think it works.

For the standouts it goes without saying that the judge carried the book. He is in my honest opinion why the book is rated so highly. No one comes close to him character wise. Glanton has some moments and so does the expriest but that’s all. Everyone else is fodder, even the kid who doesn’t do or say much other than being a great shot.

How this book is written is really hard to recreate and at times read. It’s prose at its most beautiful is flowing and gorgeous, but at its worse, conversations are indistinguishable and everything comes too quickly.

It’s enjoyable and worthy of its praise but it does have its fair share of negatives too. Enjoyably bleak and doesn’t even indulge in the ‘torture porn’ aspect these kinds of books tend to go towards.
