Tough read and definitely a slow burner but worth it in the end. Super dark but reflective of true evil that to this day encompasses the world. Open ended ending leaves a lot up for debate on the fates of certain characters. The open ended ending is divisive among the books fans, some love it and others hate it. I personally would’ve preferred a more decisive ending by the author but I’ve come to terms with his choice.

This was by far the most violent and brutal book I’ve ever read. McCarthy pulls zero punches. The complexity of the characters and dynamic between them has me reeling, particularly the Judge and the Kid. I was also surprised by the depth of this book. On the surface it seems like violence for the sake of violence, but there’s so much more to it. I also thought I’d hate the writing style, but I actually think it reinforced the Judge’s philosophies, and in some ways, added to the feeling of horror at times. Every single detail of this book felt intentional, and I loved that.

Beautiful, haunting descriptions of wandering through desolate, barren places punctuated by bearing witness to horrific violence committed by incredibly hateful people. The writing reminds me of days wandering through hot prairie fields. Feeling so small I could just turn to dust and blow away. You can feel the vast emptiness in his style, he really captures the setting amazingly. Big themes of the book are making choice about whose side one is on in a conflict, and the consequences of making (or not making) those choices. A hard read at some points, but a great book.
