It’s just mid. You spend the whole time waiting for the MC to finally catch the plot that you realized was gunna hit like 2 hrs before. She’s very woe is me and extremely unlikable.

This book had me feeling all the emotions. From sadness, to anger, to more sadness and to hopefulness, I didn’t want this book to end but at the same time, I needed to know what happened. I understand the hype. This was my first adult fantasy book and it did not disappoint!!

The good:
  • The lore was interesting
  • I liked many of the side characters
The not so good:
  • Feyre was unbelievably annoying
  • She was also so dense (the riddle????? Girl.)
  • The first 270 pages were exposition and the actual conflict wasn’t explained until a character info dumped fae history to Feyre
  • It’s an adult book written at a high middle grade/low YA level

Definitely an enjoyable read, but not utterly groundbreaking. I feel like the quality of the writing itself isn't up to par with how well she was writing Throne of Glass at the time, but it's not bad. It's definitely interesting to see the kernels she laid out for future books
(which also makes the romance a little cringe if you know where it's going)
, and makes a reread fun. I get why it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I stand by it.

Okay look, I really struggled through the first 45% of this book bc it was so boring and Feyre was so annoying and dumb. Like, I wanted to bang my head against a wall for how boring and slow moving the first almost half of this book was. Like, let's be real, it didn't get interesting until Rhys showed up. All the action is packed into the last half of the book, so much so that the book could have easily been like 50 pages shorter and done the same thing.
A lot of stuff just doesn't make sense with Feyre as a character: why does she not feel any anger towards her family for treating her poorly and not appreciating her? Why does she only use her survival instincts and hunting knowledge occasionally? Why does she act like she's being held captive when they were nothing but nice to her???
But the story definitely got better in the second half, and was saved by Lucien and Rhys. I'm only giving it more than 3 ⭐ bc of those two.
Definitely a bit cheesy at times, you can definitely see the Beauty and the Beast retelling throughout, but I think it was done fairly well overall (again, if the beginning was shorter and Feyre plugged in her brain, it would have gotten like 4.5 stars)

I get the hype now, though. Im excited to see where this series goes.

This book started so slow. I DNF the physical book twice before finally listening to the dramatized audio. The last 1/4 of the book got really good. Now I’m not sure if I want to get the physical copies of the rest of the series or just continue to listen.

It's your standard fantasy book with some smut here and there.

Not very well written.
“I love you” I said, and stabbed him.”
