THIS WAS SUCH A SOLID DEBUT.

I picked this up as one of my Book of the Month selections for February, and I'm so glad I did! This book had some many things I love: Found family trope, romance (sapphic), solid mental health representation, beautiful writing. I found Grace infuriating at times in the sense that I saw so much of myself in her character (ie., feeling overwhelmed about life decisions, choosing a career path because you think it's what you're supposed to do but not knowing where to go with it, difficulty expressing emotions, etc). This was less than 300 pages, but I think it worked because things wrapped up nicely and I still feel like I really got to know the characters. This is an own voices novel, and I would definitely recommend reading reviews by POC/LGBT readers (since I'm neither!).

I would definitely read more from this author!

3.5 ⭐️ this book was enjoyable! Although it wasn’t what I expected.. there was less romance which was ok. The romance was cute but a little cringe at times. I do like that the mental health focus and representation in this book wasn’t romanticized and showed that seeking help should not be stigmatized.

The book is boring. The best part is the opening that kind of sucks you in and then it falls apart. The author repeated the main characters name, Grace Porter, over and over throughout the text. She also made several “I’m a Porter that’s what we do” statements that fell flat. Those  were repeated numerous times in the book as well. Her friendships don’t feel believable. For someone who got drunk married in Vegas I can care less about what happens or why.
