I understand why some people did not like this book. I am all for the “second chance love” trope but sometimes that doest happen and Im ok with that storyline too.

OK so, it's a very simple sweet, and lovely book. I love reading it. the storyline is quite simple and exciting.
The first meeting between Nell and Van is so sweet and cute.
I loved all the other characters in the story. there's no lousy character or antagonist in the story. The characters are so sweet.
Nell, is such such such a sweet and kind-hearted woman she deserves the best in the world she deserved Van more than anyone.
Van or Vian (actually I like Vian more), I can't define much about him but all I can see is he grew a lot during the story and he has a very sensitive heart.
Ruth and Geoff, both were really good parents and lovers as well. but it's all destiny.

and Ed, Nick, Sam, and many other characters are fitted perfectly into the story.
In the end, I can see a 5-year-old Nell in Luke and a 5-year-old Vian in Libby.

All in all its a very beautiful book but I still cant give that one star for not an ending I wanted.

Excellent. This is the book that introduced me to Paige Toon and I’m not disappointed. I can’t wait to read this book again…

One day, maybe five years from now, you’ll understand why this happened.

One day you’ll understand why this happened. That is the entire theme of this book. Best laid plans get waylaid. Relationships come and go. People leave or people die. A planned existence becomes something new. A career you go to school for is not always the career you end with.

Paige Toon does a lot of telling, not a lot of showing, in her sometimes much too long or much too detailed story of love and longing. Van and Nell have a friendship that spans 40 years, with no signs of ending, but it doesn’t always look like they want it to. But maybe it was never supposed to.

Love story.  Not a Romance. Read at your own risk. 🥺
