Great book but the ending was very poor! Great pity!

I love Ann Cleeves' writing. She really does well with the characters and sense of place. I'd like to watch the series now but will wait so I don't have any spoilers. :)

This series is giving me insights into the Shetland Islands along with a travel bug to get there. Inspector Jimmy Perez is accompanying his new girlfriend, Fran Hunter, to her first art showing when a strange English man turns up and causes a scene. No one thinks too much of it until the next day when local crofter Kenny Thompson finds a dead body hanging from the rafters of a boat hut. It looks like suicide but is soon ruled murder. Fran's art exhibition was in conjunction with local artist and celebrity Bella Sinclair. Jimmy wonders if someone could have hated Bella enough to firstly spoil the show and then kill a man. There is another Englishman new to Shetland, writer Peter Wilding. Kenny's brother, Lawrence left Shetland 15 years ago - rumoured to be because he'd asked Bella to marry him and she refused. And as this is summer, the sun barely sets - and the 'white nights' are known to cause craziness. Could the whole case be linked to a summer 15 years ago when Bella had a huge house party with lots of guests? Great story, great characters and fantastic atmosphere.

Enjoyed this second installment of the Shetland series. The sense of place was a strong component in this book; atmospheric, quietly propulsive, and red herrings aplenty. Will definitely read the next one!

Väga palju kirjeldusi (aga ilmselt Shetlandi saare jaoks loomulik), sünge lugu ja tegelikult üsna ennustatav mõrvar. Aga muidu ikkagi üsna nauditav lugemine ja kohati põnev ka :)
