It is amazing all the major figures of the twentieth century that this man met and talked to. It starts off a little slowly, but picks up fast.

I've always been impressed with Dan Rather, not just for his career reporting on some of the most important news stories of our day, but also for the way that he isn't afraid to speak out and say what he thinks. A lot of news anchors and journalists seem to think that being an objective journalist also requires them to take no personal stances of any kind, and it's refreshing to see someone like Dan Rather who understand when there's a time to be objective and when there's a time to speak his mind. This title exemplifies the mastery Rather has of that balance, telling stories that are both quality reporting and adding in his own personal insights.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this is the first book I've read by Dan Rather, but if the rest of his works are written this well, I'm very excited to dive in and start checking out his back catalogue. Dan Rather continues to be one of the most impactful news anchors, journalists, and public figures of his generation.

Dan Rather is a legend and this poignant and funny Audible listen is worth it for this former beat reporter. Dan reported through so many 20th and 21st century historically significant events - like Dr. King’s fight for equality and the Vietnam War - that I enjoyed hearing more insights into his fulfilling career. Dan’s comments on war gave me goosebumps and his comments around ramping down emotion because “nothing counts as much as the story” resonated with me and reminded me of my own local coverage of 9/11. In particular I loved Dan’s telling of how his childhood battling rheumatic fever contributed to his “Dan-isms” and his passion for news. Just a great listen. Highly recommend.

Engaging and funny

I have seen countless Dan Rather news reports and, I must say, it was a treat to get to know more about him. As someone who went into this not knowing anything about Dan Rather personally, this was a nice surprise! He was unexpectedly funny and shared interesting tidbits spanning his career. I laughed several times throughout the performance and was intrigued by the stories he shared.
