A Light in the Sky is a story about Aluma, a girl who has always dreamed of becoming an aerial warrior astride an Empyrean Steed. When her father is tragically injured, she gets the chance to compete to become everything she has ever dreamed of.

As someone who has loved horses for as long as she can remember, I’m always looking for a good story which involves horses! Put wings on those horses and it’s even better, so I couldn’t wait to start reading this book.

This story has a bit of an old-school YA vibe. It actually reminded me a lot of Percy Jackson as far as the vibe goes. Both books are kind of straight forward with worldbuilding, characters and the way the story is going. While it was predictable, I still enjoyed it quite a lot.

I also liked how the plot was just straight forward and fast-paced. You don’t spend forever on the tournament or anything which could make a story boring or dragged out.

Aluma seemed really young to me and thus a bit rash and naïve in her actions sometimes. I actually wanted to scream a lot of times to get her head in the game hehe. Other characters I really enjoyed, although I had a hard time with their complex names. I would’ve liked for the secondary characters to be a little more developed/detailed.

I loved the relationship Aluma has with her father! While not much of him is seen in the book, he has a powerful presence since the beginning. As far as the romantic relationships went, I wasn’t really a fan. In general, I’m not a fan of love triangles because most of the time they aren’t really done well or just super cringy. The love triangle in this book falls in the last category unfortunately even though it is a classic one. I hope in the second book that will resolve itself.

The ending seemed a bit abrupt after everything that happened before. Overall, the missions the cast went on were a bit immature and hasty in general but the ending one was the cherry on top. Especially with the way the magic was brought forward and used. It seemed a bit convenient and I still don't grasp the whole concept of "light" and "dark".

Overall, I really enjoyed this story with its pegasi and magic and look forward to future books in the series.

I think if I were younger, this would have been one of my favorites. The world building is really interesting and I mean fantasy horses are great. The issue was the writing wasn’t the best, it felt a bit immature. The characters were okay but the love triangle felt very forced and just annoying. Especially since neither of the love interests were unique. It’s the brunette childhood best friend vs dark haired broody guy. I tried but just couldn’t get through it.

This is an okay book. A little simple, a little Juvenile but not bad.
But, I had a thought while reading the book, and now that I’ve thought it, I can’t stop thinking it.
This book is a fantasy spin (rather than out and out dystopian) on the Hunger Games. And now I’ve thought that, I can’t get over it, and can’t continue to read it.

The blurb and the cover for this book had me biting at the bit so to speak. A YA adventure on a cavalry of flying horses! 12 year old me would have squealed in delight at this.

It's the tale of Alumi, who has to compete in order to become an Empyrean rider and save her family's home. It sets her off on a journey of discovery, adventure and heartbreak.

This is a good YA novel. I liked the characters and adored her relationship with Thayer. I'm unsure why there really needed to be a love triangle in this book as I don't think it added anything to the narrative, unless something significant is going to happen in the following books. There was a good mix of secondary characters and the plot was exciting, I kept the pages turning to find out what was going to happen next.

It's a good start to this series. It reminded me of the hunger games meets a pony book (younger me lived for a good pony book!)

Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an ARC in return for an honest review.

A high-flying adventure A Light in the Sky is a fight for freedom, a tale of betrayal and a story of hope.

Aluma is the daughter of a retired Empyrean Rider and she wants nothing more than to follow in her Father’s footsteps and protect her kingdom from the sky atop a winged horse. Denied the chance to compete to become a Rider, Aluma feels crushed by the laws of her Kingdom, confused by her brother’s fawning affection for the selfish King, and curiously suspicious of the strange behaviour of her father and his friends.

When betrayal leaves Aluma’s father near death, he urges Aluma to take the the reins and become a Rider – to be the light. Suddenly, Aluma’s entire world is changing and nothing is quite as it seemed.

Plot or Character Driven: Plot

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book is the perfect introduction to fantasy for young readers. The world building is slow enough that is easily understood and the magic elements are interesting. The fact that FLYING horses are included is a plus. I loved that!
The story follows our main character Aluma Banks, daughter of a famous Empyrean Rider as she discovers the secrets that surround her dystopian world. We have a love triangle, a newly discovered power, a moustache-wielding enemy and a rebel army. Honestly, it feels like a book that should have come out years ago. It reminds me of Divergent with a mix of Shadow and Bone. It is a bit of a cliché but I hope that as the series unfold, we will find some more unique plotlines.
As much as I felt the beginning was kind of slow and hard to get into; once you are on the second half of the book, everything happens so quickly. It kept me hooked and I'll definitely keep an eye out for the sequel which I hope is confirmed by now because TALK ABOUT AN ENDING.

well, that was terrible.

the book could actually be a success..... had this been published 5 years ago. unfortunately, insubstantial books like this cannot hope to hold a flame to the diverse, imaginative books being published today. let me start with the watery worldbuilding and bland writing; or wait, how about we start with the protagonist?

the protagonist is the standard YA fantasy protagonist. her voice is too familiar and monotonous. she does not bring anything new to the table. she is boring, but what sets her apart from other protagonists is that she is especially stupid and naïve. her inner monologue is so annoying. the other characters are one-dimensional; there is absolutely no complexity or depth. the mustache-twirling villain was so pitiful because there was no reason for the villainy (and it wasn't explained at all, even though he had his evil villain monologue).

the plot is simple, but the execution is so pathetic i almost feel bad. everything is so predictable and convenient, it's like the author didn't even try to make an effort. i could see how everything would unfold by the time i was 30% into it, and yet our protagonist did not (again, she's very dumb). idk how many times i rolled my eyes while reading this shit actually.

overall, it's so corny and cheap. it reminds me of the wattpad books i read when i was younger, but at least those tried; this didn't. tldr; it's lame. the acknowledgements are cute tho.

This book is really amazing! The world building and characters are excellent and relatable and immersive. While it's the first of the series, it's definitely a must-read.

In general I thought this story was pretty good and has a lot of potential but I really hate love triangles and this one was particularly insufferable. And the cast of characters was not at all diverse. This is the author’s first published novel though so I’m looking forward to seeing how they improve through the rest of the series
