⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 (Stories)

Synopsis: This is a story collection about Latina women of indigenous ancestry. It is based in Denver, Colorado, and the land of the American West is as important to the story as the women themselves. There are stories of ancestry and heritage, families that fall into cycles of violence against women, and leaving your home of your childhood, and coming home to a gentrified city. Mostly, the stories are about home

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this book! It’s a bunch of stories that are all slightly interconnected, and are absolutely beautiful. Many of the stories are dark, but aim to show the lightness. All of the women in the stories are fierce in their own way, and all of the stories show the hard truths about being women. I highly recommend this book, and I enjoyed listening on audiobook too!

Honestly, I have never read anything like this, so I have nothing to compare it to. But I highly recommend you read it!

the sadness that pokes through the pages of these stories is eerily beautiful. sprinkles of hope and connection are prominent through these heartbreaking stories, mostly about children and women in and around denver, colorado. the stories about children, mostly young girls, have a recurring theme in a number of these stories of being left behind by their parents by death or by abandonment, or even before they have left.

while beautiful, i can't say that i enjoyed all of these stories equally. there were many times that i felt that a story ended very abruptly. i was left hanging and searching for closure --- not only for me, but for the characters as well. there were times that i was longing for a story to keep going since they felt incomplete. however, the majority of these short stories were well-written and thought provoking and overall i did enjoy this short story collection.

Incredible. Utterly and remarkably incredible. Like, the kind of great that makes you want to pick up a pen and write something but at the same time it makes you say nah forget it, how could I ever capture anything in such a way. These stories are brilliant. The perfect details of life captured in the here and there sentences—there are questions and answers, mystery and the solution all at once in every page. Read this book.
