The Thief

Fast paced and a short overall book that was easy to read. Talks about a gang of pickpockets and a secret heist that has to be pulled off, the main character is always looking back at his partner and his own mistakes. A very tightly written (translated?) book that includes a heartfelt side plot about a younger pickpocket and seeing the main character in other people. I left the last chapter unread for a while after reading the whole rest of the book semi fast because I could feel a bad (apparently very typically japanese?) ending coming but overall I really liked the book. Favourite quote because I made notes while reading this one “but just because it’s my peak, that doesn’t necessarily mean that I’ll reach it. What I mean is, it’s my limit. It feels wonderful. I destroy all of those values and I exist solely as sensation. I become unbeerably hot and then vanish.”

This book was really interesting. It really depicted the dark side of Japan in Tokyo. And I really liked our mc here. I will read the next book soon as well.

Diappointing book. Luckily it was only 200 odd pages. The 2 star rating is of the over all experience though it cannot be denied that the book was good and slick in places and did suggest of a big twist on the end. But it just fizzled like a dam firework. No twist, no surprise, no plot even. Can get away by saying, "Hey it's a noire." Sorry but try harder.

Loved this. It flows naturally and you end up flying through it. The only thing that frustrated me was the ending; it was just too abrupt and open-ended, aaagh...
