Nishimura is a pickpocket, highly skilled and proficient in his chosen crime. In the streets of Tokyo there are few better than him. He is alone with no family and no friends, just his wits and experience to keep him alive.

One day a character from his past finds him. He needs him for a job, and he is not taking no for an answer. This job exposes him to the even darker criminal underbelly of Japan and he finds himself trapped in a intricate web of murder and theft involving the rich and powerful. He is tasked with three almost impossible tasks if he is to escape with his life.

It was a short swift read. The tension in the book was good, and there is no wasted descriptions; you are fully immersed into this underworld. Solid Japanese thriller.

Automatic reread for me. 1 of my all time favorite books and author. I just wish the book never ended.

Book Riot's Reader Harder Challenge 2018

Task #19 - A book of genre fiction in translation

Not at all what expected in the best ways. This book is such a cool blend of noir settings and characters, balanced with an introspective and heartbreaking human story.

Well, that was a bit of a letdown. I even somewhat liked the guy

I wouldn’t recommend this book. It was uneventful, bland and utterly disatisfying. After I finished I realized there was actually no point or meaning in what I’d read. The events were devoid of substance and the selling point of the book (the heist) is like 5 pages long. The rest is just pseudo-noir blabber that again has no significance in the long run.
I kept waiting for the big reveal or at least the big something, but the ending was a flop too. What a waste of time :(
