I think the biggest issue I had was just following the audio. I would likely rate this higher if I had physically read it.
The plot is tense and interesting. All of the characters come across as very unreliable making it hard to know who to believe. I really enjoyed that aspect.

I had a hard time staying interested in this one and I think that was for two different reasons. The first one simply being that I think I was in the mood for a different kind of book. The second being that this wasn’t quite what I was expecting, so it threw me off in the beginning. After reading this, I wouldn’t really call it a thriller, which is how it’s been marketed.
It had a very slow start. We learn information about Kat and Jude’s pasts bit by bit, but mostly we’re watching Kat develop a new relationship with a man named Sab. I think we spend more time on this than we actually need to. At times, it did help us (and Kat) to learn about the traits she already possessed, but overall we didn’t need so much time spent on their budding relationship.
It picks up a little over halfway through and we start getting more into the nitty gritty of what exactly happened to them during their childhoods, and it isn’t pretty. I think the author was often too vague about the horrible things they went through, and it would have been more powerful to just call it what it was (unless that terminology didn’t exist in the 70s/80s?). There were other things the author was vague about (like Jude’s potential queerness) that I would have liked to have been outright said or at least explored.
I did really enjoy the few reveals/twists that we were given throughout the book. I thought they were effective and definitely pulled me more into the story as we went. When we finally got the full picture of what happened with Kat’s accident, that’s when I was finally really into this story. Of course, that was pretty much the ending unfortunately.
I also liked that all of Jude’s stories had some truth to them, whether it was theirs or not. I appreciated how everything tied together in the end. I also totally understood Jude’s motives to keep their past a secret from Kat.
Overall, I think this story was fairly well crafted. There were just a few things I would have spent less or more time on and I would have liked the pace to be more consistent.

Unfortunately I DNF'd this at the 50% mark.
I was really looking forward to this book, but I was left feeling disappointed. I love a good psychological thriller, and this synopsis was on point with a dramatic storyline with a set of mirror twins that get into a bad car accident and one twin dies and comes back to life with amnesia. This leaves their twin sister to fill in the blanks of their lives. Add a cult into the mix and I'm in.
Originally I was hooked from the start of the accident, but once Jude starts working things got very slow. Kat begins to explore her neighborhood and figuring out what she likes as a person without the influence of her sister. There's so many different timelines happening at once that it starts to get confusing. I began to lose interest in the characters by the time we get a good look into the cult. If the timeline was more structered the transistion would've been excuted smoother.
I did enjoy the attention to detail in descriptions of horror elements. Those scenes kept my attention and left me feeling uncomfortable in a good way.
Thank you, though, to NetGalley and Henry Holt & Co. for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. This title published January 16, 2024
