Terry Pratchett is the funniest man in history.

The tone is perfect. There's something profoundly calming about the way that Terry Pratchett writes about death both as a character and as a general topic -- gentle, peaceful. Everything feels "bigger" than our silly human world, and honestly, I find that to be really comforting, when the descriptions are put like this.

I found myself, like, getting physical chills and goosebumps from reading some of these lines. Descriptions of how sharp the scythe are actually made me sort of squinch up and, like, turn the pages carefully to avoid paper cuts, because THAT is how immersive this descriptive writing is. It's extremely easy to get into the flow of.

And, of course, it's fall-off-your-seat hilarious. I took screenshots of pages here and there and texted them to my mom because they're so well-set-up. Terry Pratchett knows exactly how much work to ask his readers to do: he knows EXACTLY how much to set up a joke but then leave the rest to the reader's imagination. It's perfect.

The lessons that Death learns are profound and beautiful and are just... so hopeful about the value of time and of living, and what a magical thing to find in a book all about the necessity of death, right?
