unfortunately this was (very clearly) written by a straight white man. the best aspects are Really Fucking Good!! it's just there's also the... SA as a plot device... real world racial slurs in Deeply Otherworldly scifi setting... rather one-dimensional female characters.... 

i also felt like the ending fizzled despite the great build-up.


i mean, i liked it enough to read it again. and recommend it. i do recommend this book. just with a GIANT warning label.

This was, at times, incredibly difficult to read, but it feels wrong to give it anything other than five stars. There is the worst of humanity in this book, and an unfortunate implication that we don’t really get better in the future (although the sci-fi elements of this book are fantastic to read about regardless). However, there is also an enduring message of people doing what they can and bonding together despite cruelty and oppression and that shit ALWAYS gets me. That plus musings on death and the afterlife equals my ideal book.
