I’m so conflicted with how to rate this book. There were parts of this book that I absolutely loved and were wonderfully well written and beautiful…and then there were parts that i hated so much and I don’t understand why the author thought to write them the way he did. I think I understand what the author was trying to accomplish but there are better ways to show absolute human suffering without constantly defaulting to SA.
Also there was really no reason for the n word to be in here multiple times. Yes the bad guys where purposely being derogatory but they were in a weird futurist sci-fi world…there’s other ways that could have been written.
I love the premise of this book and I love the love story and the characters are creative and quirky (honestly except for the main character, he’s just kinda a generic dude) but he didn’t have so much audacity that it bothered me.
So I guess this gets three stars, right in the middle because my love/hate with this one is 50/50.

Why did he have to say the n-word, the message would've come across with literally any made up slur. There was no reason. The author is a white man, this was written in 2017... But I don't think the book should be edited to exclude this word now, it's a great topic of conversation. Is it okay for white people to say the n-word in literature? Why? What makes it different then actually speaking it? Or writing it online?

It was a good read otherwise, sometimes sweet, a lot of the times fucked up.

The whole time I kept thinking it was badly written but there were some interesting ideas so I pushed on. It was very clearly a white guy writing about a religion and culture he was only slightly familiar with. There was the fact every life he lived had a "sexy teen" story, was almost always white except when he needed to virtue signal and  just randomly and without warning sexual assault might happen.

The final straw was in life where it all sexy naked teenagers on a distant planet and one of the upper class refer to the all white as "moon n-words" hard R. I looked up the author, he is so very middle aged and white.

Suzie, aka death, has no characterization other being into The Coolest Guy Ever™️ main character, Milo.

Terry Pratchett was glib but it worked because there was a lot of heart with his characters and in his writing in general. Michael Poore is no Terry Pratchett
