I wanted to throw this book across the room when I finished it. While certain chapters were quite imaginative, the storyline was all over the place. Each chapter served as more of a short story with specific chapters trying to tie it all together. When you finally get to the very end (because at that point, with all the short stories that fit in the nearly 400 pages, you just want it to be over), you come to find that the end appears to be the author’s way of giving up or finishing on a deadline. You could look at the ending to mean something very poignant (maybe that life is, in fact, the heaven or “Oversoul” we’re wanting to make it to after death), but I expected something more imaginative and beautiful after the rollercoaster of life and death I had just been taken on (and not entirely in the best way). The author would’ve done well to cut the book in half and use that energy to write a better ending.

It started off strong and witty in places, but it was hard to get past the casual misogyny. Milo never seems to grow as a character. It’s borderline torture porn. I quit in the chapter where he goes to Unferth, for what it’s worth.

I couldn’t get past all of the misogyny and racist undertones. This book was very clearly written by a straight white man

I wish I could give half a star. If I give 5 stars, I believe everyone should read the book. And tehre really aren't many of those. 3 stars tend to be for "this was entertaining, not necessarily Great Literature" So, a lot of books that I think are excellent, but not for everybody, get 4 stars.

I will read this again. Leonard Cohen sang “There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in”

This book is cracked.
