I wanted to read the book because I saw the movie as a child. But in the book, thankfully omitted in the film, are some seriously disgusting racist tropes. They jar and take you right out of the story. And they are not part of the plot, they don’t need to be there. They are casual comments meant to imply that back people are inferior, as if he’s writing his story in yh 19th century instead of the 20th.
The story has it’s strengths, as if he Karig almost prefigured Catch-22. Thank goodness whoever made the film Disneyfied the story; it’s better for it.
