since elisa gabbert no longer reads her goodreads reviews i can say how much it annoyed me that she mentioned her husband in almost every essay without feeling like i might hurt her feelings

A refreshing read that is designed to be with you where ever you are. I love the thought provoking essays and their little snippets of simple but important aspects of life. On top of this I could carry it in my back pocket and break it out while sitting in a doctor's office or in the local coffee shop. Just a great idea to design a book this way. Also, there is plenty of room in the margins for notes and comments. This is one book that got thoroughly used!

The vast majority of what is talked about is so banal, such common thought, you wouldn’t bring it up in conversation, much less write an essay about it. Very boring tbh, mentions Twitter a weird number of times, and irrelevant title for the collection. No arc to the essays, and sometimes badly supported, sort of like a long series of book reviews which is ironic for someone who claims to hate Goodreads so much.

I picked this book up about a year ago based on a strong review or two. I thought I'd be interested in the author's thoughts, but it turned out I wasn't.

This book is a record of a very thoughtful and articulate reader. No huge theory of literature here, just a collection of notes and thoughts on her personal reading, and her experience of writing. The author notes, "I'm a promiscuous and impatient reader..." and that's half the fun of the book--her essays are all over the place, discussing dreams, translation, writing, and poetry. She writes, "The greatest lines in poetry are infinitely quotable while having no definite meaning...to read poetry, one must have a mind of poetry." Written in a familiar style, these essays are fascinating and a great pleasure to read.
