Excellent author interview here:

This book is a fictionalized story about real people. In this case, the story is about Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife of Charles Lindbergh, the first man to fly over the Atlantic Ocean to Paris. I've always been fascinated with their story, especially with the kidnapping of their son in the 1930s.
The author, Melanie Benjamin, does a fantastic job of weaving fact and fiction together to make a very interesting story.
Being a mother, I've always had a lot of sympathy for Anne Morrow Lindbergh but I've never really known much about Charles. I realize that this book is not a biography; it's fiction. The stories around Charles may or may not be totally accurate but I believe the author portrayed his spirit and his character in a fair manner. Charles is not an unlikable character, nor is he someone you sympathize with.
Lately I've seen a lot of these historically fictionalized novels based on real people. I have to say that I find them very enjoyable. But I have to keep reminding myself that they are not biographical or autobiographical so I can't rely 100% on the information presented. Still, they're entertaining!
I give this book a solid 3.5 rating, rounded up to 4 because that's how I am!
I was on my way home from the library when I realized that the author of this book also wrote Alice I Have Been, which I did not like. I considered turning around and going back to the library, but I was more than halfway home and the traffic was pretty bad.
I should have turned around. The characters who are more like caricatures, the frequently appalling sentence structure, the obvious mother issues and the inability to present a character who is actually likable were too much for me. I couldn't finish it. I don't want to know this story enough to put up with this book any longer.

Interesting story. I didn't know much about the Lindbergh's--just the basics--so it was interesting to have this fictional glimpse into their life. It can be difficult for me to read about a woman who is so subservient to her man, but it's based on a real person, and I was so curious about the trajectory her life took. Anne is a fully realized character and while I didn't always agree with her, I was intrigued enough to follow her story. Definitely a conversation-worthy book and one that would suit book clubs well.

In the author's note she wrote that "everyone loves the Lindberghs!" I do not concur. I realize this is fiction; however, it was drivel. The protagonist's voice was annoying throughout, not just during her "compliant" stage. I am unimpressed with the Lindberghs certainly as presented by this author. Nothing in the book prompts me to look for more. I feel for them in every parents nightmare, but clearly Charles was a controlling asshole and I'm sorry she stayed with him.
