Not sure what I quite feel tbh. First off did not realize this was set in Israel of all places. But besides that I feel like the complexity and the open endedness of their relationship and the problems they had as mother and daughter was portrayed quite well. Definitely a good book for a book club. I have mixed feelings, to me the mother was too obsessed. Her understanding and love of her daughter was overbearing and over-possessive in an emotional way. She seems from the outside a good mother but she has a very fragile mentality and this weird coddling and pervasively nosy attitude towards her daughter. She doesn’t allow her to grow on her own but instead forces her personal reservations and emotions upon her. In ruining this boys life, this becomes abundantly clear. She doesn’t know where the lines should end and where her place is within her daughter’s world.  Keeping her at arms length seems only the logical conclusion. Her love as a mother was a case of protection but in the wrong way. You can see that it’s not just one big moment but an underlying sentiment where the mother sees the daughter as an attachment to herself instead of a separate identity. The words and ways she describes her daughter alone I found wrong and weird.

This is a tense and deeply engrossing read, in a good way. I was desperate to keep reading and understand the reason for the estrangement. The short chapters work well for me too. Unfortunately the ending felt rushed and I didn’t feel it sufficiently explored the things I was wanting to understand about the daughter. Still a good book though that I’d recommend.

I’m a big fan of mother daughter tropes but this one fell a bit flat for me. There were a lot of opportunities to explore what fell apart and why (though I have my theory) but they weren’t taken, so it felt like the whole book was just skirting around the issue and ignoring the elephant in the room.
