In The Bird Eater, Ania Ahlborn uses horror to talk about grief, adding some supernatural elements. The eerie atmosphere and psychological tension make this novel a gripping read. If you like haunted houses you’ll certainly like this book.

While the story did keep me reading to the end because I wanted to find out what was going on, I was disappointed with it in the end. Oddly I felt both dissatisfied with a lack of explanation as to what was actually going on in the story, as well as finding the ending predictable. I would have given it 1 1/2 stars if possible, but I felt 2 stars was too much, so I had to settle for 2 stars.

While the opening was incredible and set the tone well, the rest of the book didn't follow up. There were definitely creepy moments, but overall things were "meh". The main problem was a bit of a spiral: there were a few too many characters/perspective for such a tight story, so every character outside of Aaron (including Birdie himself) are extremely flat, which is only exacerbated by the numerous point-of-views, and so on. I did like reading this, but I was a bit disappointed.

This horror book was just what I needed. My first book by Ania Ahlborn and I devoured it. All things creepy, spooky and make you second guess the story multiple times. A very solid read

This book is horrifying, gruesome at time, but utterly amazing. The visuals the author provides will leave you will nightmares. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, as it never at any point in time was boring. Every single chapter offered new insight to the disturbing journey of main character Aaron.

My only negative comment would be that I wish Aaron had found out some more things about his family's past. It left a little bit of a hole for me personally. Although this is a very minor counterpart in a wider perspective. This book is well written and will make you want to read more horror stories, something I thought I'd never say!
