Malinda Lo has hit it out of the park again. I have to admit that I first thought the subject of the book wouldn't interest me, but right away Lo's engaging writing sucked me in. She works her far-reaching perspective and plot web with great skill, and the story moves along with great pacing.

Lo's characters are a cheerfully diverse cast, reflecting my own experience growing up and living in the Bay Area. I was stunned and incredibly pleased by Reese, the main character, who is a hero to be admired for her curiosity, talent, integrity, and emerging adulthood. It was also nice to have some wonderful bisexual visibility - it meant a lot to see my sexuality written of seriously and with great acceptance.

A strange blend of government conspiracy and teen relationship drama. Normally I don't like love triangles but I actually liked all three of the characters so I can't be too mad about it. Also aliens yes please.

I could not put this book down. If you are interested in government conspiracies/area 51 and looking for a well-written whirlwind of a book you would do well to pick up Adaptation.

I should have loved this book. Government conspiracies, aliens, teen angst. But, sadly, it was VERY heavy on the angst and light on the conspiracy and aliens. The characters also didn't really figure anything out -- they just kept plodding along until someone told them what was up. I won't read the next book.

Despite the fact that I totally gravitate toward **diversity books** (especially in YA), I somehow missed the fact that this book has been labeled as such. I just though, mutant birds and Area 51 (HI NEVADA) and San Francisco, I should read this.

Then when I was about 50 pages in my friend mentioned that this is apparently a Lesbian Book, so my interest increased (though I was skeptical due to the female protagonist's very male love interest). I kept reading and realized that this book has a bisexual main character, which seriously happens NEVER (at least in my experience reading YA lit). I think it is very interesting that I missed the fact that this book was going to have a storyline that even involved the LGBTQ community...and also very interesting that my (less clueless) friend had heard this bit but that she'd heard the protagonist described as Lesbian rather than Bi.

Long story short, representation is good and so is Area 51. Although the storyline did seem a bit implausible but hey, maybe that was the point.

I’m gonna be honest here and say that I have no idea how Adaptation ended up in both my TBR or in my kindle library but there we are. It was there. And while I can’t say I was particularly... bothered(?)by the story and I don’t think I want to read any further books in this series I’m giving it three stars because anything less seems unfair. See. I don’t think I’m the intended audience for this book.

Bet you guys are glad you stuck around reading this review, huh?

I wasn't expecting some of the twists in this, and I feel like maybe they could've been hinted at more. I'm worried about David's feelings in subsequent books. I think he's going to get jerked around, even if unintentionally. Otherwise, another solid Malinda Lo book.

The pacing is strange, but I guess that's life for you. I think I was a little disappointed by everything that happened once R and D step off the plane at the end.
SpoilerBut WHY do the aliens want to give humans those powers?? WHY?????? Also, I'm here for alien ex-girlfriends, less here for mind reading ~mysterious powerful connections~ with boys, but that's a personal bias.
