This story was a rollercoaster of emotions as you follow the life of Camille just before the French Revolution breaks out. There are some moments that don't flow in the book and that seem a bit forced, but overall the story was lovely and the characters relatable.
Moderate: Domestic abuse

Loved the world building. Enjoyed the slow plot but was disappointed with the “ah-ha!” moments in the resolution. Felt like everything hinged on one rarely-seen character. Wouldn’t classify as romance. Liked the magic system!
Minor: Abandonment, Addiction, Alcoholism, Blood, Classism, Death, Death of parent, Domestic abuse, and Self harm

This book is so charming. From the premise to the execution, it was a delight to have accompanied me through the holiday rush. I quite liked the magic system and how it ties in with the aristocrats and how they are seen by the citizens of Paris. It gives some truth to their gossip of royals using tonics from fountains of youths and sacrifice because in a way it is.
I did not know it was a part of a series, though, so I might check the rest out.
